Maintain a Safe Distance: Do not approach gorillas closer than the recommended distance set by the park authorities. Typically, this distance is at least 7 meters (about 21 feet). Approaching too closely can stress the gorillas or provoke defensive behavior.
Do Not Make Direct Eye Contact: In gorilla society, direct eye contact can be seen as a threat or a sign of aggression. Avoid prolonged eye contact with gorillas, and if a gorilla looks directly at you, it's advisable to lower your gaze.
Avoid Loud Noises and Sudden Movements: Gorillas are generally peaceful animals, but loud noises, sudden movements, or erratic behavior can frighten them. Maintain a calm and quiet demeanor during the trek.
Do Not Touch the Gorillas: Never attempt to touch, pet, or make physical contact with gorillas. They are wild animals, and touching them can transmit diseases to them and vice versa. It can also disrupt their natural behaviors.
Respect Their Space: Do not block the path of gorillas or attempt to force them to move. Always give them the right of way, and let them choose their own path.
Do Not Feed Gorillas: Feeding gorillas human food is strictly prohibited. Gorillas have specialized diets, and human food can be harmful to their health.
No Smoking or Littering: Smoking and littering are not only harmful to the environment but can also disturb gorillas and their habitats. Always dispose of trash properly and refrain from smoking during the trek.
Stay Calm in the Presence of Gorillas: If a gorilla charges or approaches you, remain calm and follow the instructions of your guides. Do not run away or make sudden movements.
Avoid Visiting When Sick: If you are feeling unwell, have a contagious illness, or have a cold, it's essential to avoid visiting gorillas to prevent the potential transmission of diseases.
Observe Time Limits: Most gorilla trekking permits come with a specific time limit for the encounter with the gorillas (usually around one hour). Respect this time limit and do not overstay your welcome.
Do Not Use Flash Photography: Flash photography can disturb and stress gorillas. Use only natural light and follow any specific photography guidelines provided by your guides and the park authorities.
Do Not Bring Pets: Pets are not allowed during gorilla treks as they can disturb both the gorillas and other wildlife in the area.
