INTRODUCTION

The Akagera National Park Rwanda is located in north-eastern Rwanda, bordering Tanzania. Swamps and small lakes dominate the landscape, which flow in the path of the Akagera River. The combination of the network of water sources and the distinctive landscape creates breathtaking vistas. It’s a truly amazing ecosystem. The park was named after the River Akagera, which supplies a number of bodies of water, including Lake Ihema.

The scenery is low, with large plains dominated by grass, the cactus-like Euphorbia candelabra shrub, and both thick and thin woodlands, yet it does continue with Rwanda’s typical harsh terrain.

WILDLIFE IN AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

When it comes to wildlife, the Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s best savanna destination, where you can enjoy game viewing during exhilarating game drives and boat rides, during which you will have the opportunity to see a range of large mammals and bird species.

The Akagera national park is home to Africa’s big five (elephants, lions, buffalos, rhinoceros, and leopards) as well as a wide range of other wild animals including hyenas, zebras, giraffes, and a variety of antelopes including bushbucks, roan antelopes, Topis, klipspringer, Oribis, Cape eland, waterbuck.  Olive baboons, Vervet monkeys, and nocturnal bush babies are just a few of the primates that may be found in this area. Crocodiles and hippos abound in the shallow waters of Lake Ihema, and boat rides are the best way to see them.

WHAT”RE THE BIG FIVE

Big game hunters invented the name “Big 5” in the 19th century to describe the five most dangerous beasts to hunt on foot in Africa: African elephant, Cape buffalo, African lion, leopard, and rhinoceros.
